Our origins began long before the age of the computer. In 1902 Joseph Leiter of Chicago purchased the property which currently is Zeigler, as well as the mineral rights to the same property. We are the beginning of the coal industry in Franklin County which lead to our town reaching a peak population of over 5,500 in 1928. Zeigler Coal Company origins began with mine #1 and mine #2 which ceased production in 1948 and 1951 respectfully.
Coal gradually declined in influence but did not diminish significantly until the admission of the Clean Air Act. Today there are no active mines in Franklin County but our heritage continues.
Respectfully, Dennis Mitchell Mayor of the City of Zeigler
