The Story behind the Door

The Zeigler Lumber Company

was located on the Corner of Pine Street and Birch Street -

now where Allan & Linda Patton live.

                                      Zeigler Lumber Company

If you check the spelling out on the door glass (Zeigler) is misspelled.

The Story:  When the Zeigler Lumber Company was built - they ordered

a front door with their name etched in the glass, as shown above, except the company that etched the glass did what many have done in the past and reversed the 'E' & 'I' in Zeigler.

Upon receiving the door and installing it - they quickly relized the mistake and reordered a new door with the correct spelling.

Of course they could not send the misspelled door back, because they had etched the glass, so they put it back in the shipping box and stored it in their building.  In the 60's Clarence Payne was commissioned to tear down the building and when he found the door, he knew that he could use it in his new garage that he was building.  Zeigler Lumber Company Door Error

This door is still being used today at 109 W. Maryland St. (previously (before 911 addressing-the address was 108 W. Maryland St.).

Larry & Linda Christy now own the property and Larry grew-up with the mispelled door.  Larry said that the wood of the door is starting to show it's age and when he replaces the door; he will save the glass for history sake and present the window to the city when a place to display it is available.

The Door can be viewed at 109 W. Maryland Street and is installed in the detached garage on the South Side facing the house.  Please ask for permission and Larry & Linda will be glad to show you the door.

(The Mis-Spelling of Zeigler - must have been common)

Check the spelling on the Milk Bottle from the Home Dairy)
